MelanesiaWidespread Indo-West Pacific, ranging to subtropical zones. Clear coastal slopes to outer reef habitats on rubble patches and sandy areas with soft corals from about 6m depth. Often on open sand flats with large remote bommies in depths of about 20m. Adults form small to large schools, feeding in open water on zooplankton. Juveniles congregate on reefs, usually at depths of 10.-20m, mostly feeding on mysids. Length to 16cm.
