Western Indian OceanRed Sea and Indian Ocean, ranging east to Bali, but several geographical variations. Occurs primarily on deep drop-offs along outer reefs at depths of 20m or more. Juveniles are solitary and adults form small groups, each with several females and a dominant male. Females have a white band on the base of the tail and males have a lined pattern on the body. Males in the Red Sea have the white band. Length to 12cm.
